The world we live in is a scary place for men. This idea of being a man and doing the things we are called to do by God is looked down upon by society. When we are being who God has called us to be, we are persecuted by those who are living in the world. Being a Christian male in the 21st century is not for the faint of heart or for those who are too afraid to stand strong. Now is the time where men must stand and be courageous, not because we are anything spectacular, but because we serve a spectacular God who has given us a calling that we must uphold.
In Daniel chapter 6, we see a man who is being challenged by society. Daniel is told that he can no longer honor his God due to a king who is standing by his word and sly subordinates enforcing this rule. Many of the things that we must do to honor God are being challenged by our current society. Daniel did not falter at this and neither should we. Daniel knew full well that if he was to stand against the orders of the governing body, he was going to be thrown into the den. This was no surprise to him. Similarly, we know that standing up for the things we are called to do will make us an outcast. We are not going to be liked by everyone. We will lose people in our lives that we care about. Some of us look at this and decide that it is not worth it to be courageous. We defy the commands of our God in order to appease those around us.
Daniel was thrown into the pit for his transgressions against the king. He was expected to be eaten alive. Daniel was loved by the king, and he was hoping that Daniel’s God would protect him. Sure enough, that is what happened. Those who opposed Daniel were thrown in the pit once he was released, but they were not as lucky. God protected Daniel from harm’s way, and He will protect us as well. When we are courageous and make sure that our courage is rooted in God, we are showing the world that there is Someone that is stronger than the world around us. We are showing that society does not have a hold over our God.
My favorite part of this passage is the closing:
“I make a decree, that in all my royal dominion
people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel,
For he is the living God,
his kingdom shall never be destroyed,
and his dominion shall be to the end.
He delivers and rescues;
he works signs and wonders
in heaven and on earth,
he who has saved Daniel
from the power of the lions.”
God used one man’s courage to change a kingdom. If we stand strong in courage and be the men that we are called to be, God will use us to change the world around us. Instead of becoming part of the status quo, we will set the bar for the godly men around us to be courageous.
