Noticing the Light • Devotion #4: “Love Came Down At Christmas”

“Love Came Down At Christmas” was written by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830-1894). She not only wrote this carol, but also poems, prayers, and children’s books often under the pseudonym Ellen Alleyne. It is believed that she never married or had children and that she suffered poor health from age 16. Her deep faith is thought to be partially due to the comfort she found in writing.

Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, Love divine

Love was born at Christmas,

Stars and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,

Love incarnate, Love divine

Worship we our Jesus:

But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,

Love be yours and love be mine,

Love to God and all men,

Love for plea and gift and sign.

Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, Love divine

Love was born at Christmas,

Stars and angels gave the sign.

Rossetti used the word love 17 times in these four short verses. I am surprised more Christmas carols do not speak of God’s love more since the Bible uses the word 684 times. Christmas is clearly a time of love. It is not just an excellent time to express and show love to one another, but it is clearly a time when God gave His Son to us in love. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

It is believed that “Love Came Down At Christmas” was based on 1 John 4:7-11, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”

God loves us.

We are to love God.

We are to love one another.

“Love came down at Christmas,

Love all lovely, Love divine”
