Several verses speak of the Messiah (Jesus) as He establishes the throne of David forever:
“You have said, ‘I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’ Selah.” Psalm 89:3-4
“His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me. Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies. Selah.” Psalm 89:36-37
“Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” Isaiah 9:7
This can also be seen in God’s covenant with David (1 Chronicles chapter 17).
The angel Gabriel told Mary about the Son she was going to have (even though she was still a virgin), “He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32-33). The angels must have been excited to watch Jesus leave Heaven to come to Earth to fulfill prophecy and be the Savior.
Hebrews 1:8 adds, “But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.’” The throne of David became the throne of the Son (Jesus). We know He is the “King of kings and Lord of lords:”
“To keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.” 1 Timothy 6:14-15
“They will make war on the Lamb, and the Lamb will conquer them, for he is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those with him are called and chosen and faithful.” Revelation 17:14
“On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.”Revelation 19:16
The Messiah (Jesus) will establish the throne of David forever. He is the “King of kings.” We are His people. He leads; we follow. We are honored to be able to serve Him.
