1 John 1 • Devotion #5: Original Sin

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” 1 John 1:8-10

Sin entered our world when Eve allowed herself to be deceived by Satan, who was in the form of a snake. Satan convinced Eve to eat off the tree that God told Adam and Eve not to eat. Then Eve gave the fruit to Adam, and he also ate the fruit that he was commanded not to eat. Sin then entered into the world, and everyone born of a woman was born with original sin.

Psalm 51:5 says, Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.”

I believe we were all born with different original sins in which we are more susceptible. I struggle with many things, but they are different than those with which my wife struggles. I think we can all agree that different things affect different people in different ways. We are all different.

We can all admit we all have struggled with sin in our lives. Sin is anything that we do that is against God. In 1 John 1:8-10, John says that if you say you do not have struggles with sin in life, you are a liar and you are lying to yourself. However, if we admit we have sinned and confess them, God will always forgive us of those sins and makes us clean from those things.

I have been born with original sin. However, I am thankful that no matter what I struggle with in life, if I confess it to the living God, He will forgive me and cleanse me from it.
