Delivery Man • Gideon

We have a lot of false idols in this world. Every false idol does not need to be a “god” like the past so-called “gods” like Zeus or the Egyptian god, Ra. In our culture alone there are numerous false gods that we do not even recognize as gods such as electronics, money, friends, or success. Anything that we put more time and effort into than we do God and our relationship with Him is a false idol.
Charles Spurgeon once said, “Revenge, lust, ambition, pride, and self-will are too often as exalted as the gods of man’s idolatry; while holiness, peace, contentment, and humility are viewed as unworthy of a serious thought.”
These idols are prevalent in our society and things from which we need to be delivered. To be delivered from these gods can often be difficult and uncomfortable. Gideon was also placed in an uncomfortable position when an angel of the Lord came to him.
“That night the Lord said to him, ‘Take your father’s bull, and the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.’ So Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had told him. But because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night” (Judges 6:25-27).
Here is a man that came from a lowly family in a group of people always on the run. God came to him to help deliver his people from the enemy and to deliver them from Baal, a false god. Gideon was asked to rid the town of their false god and the altar that was for him, and to replace it with an altar to the one true God. Gideon was afraid but did what God asked him to do.
Sometimes taking a step of faith and trusting God to deliver us from our “gods” can be scary, but remember that we do not need to do it by ourselves. Jesus is the only one that can truly deliver us from the gods of society. Jesus is now that altar we need to come to so that we can worship His Father. Replace the altar in your life with Jesus, and you can also be delivered.
