Who Am I?

Gather | Devotion #5: Who Am I?

“Who am I?” is a question that I had asked myself often in my “B.C.” (before Christ) times. I would describe myself as being scattered, goofy, clumsy, unstable, useless, unlovable, a mistake, a joke, tainted, and unworthy. That is how I viewed myself. I think I probably carried myself like that too. I brought children into this world with my belief that I was not good enough. My kids watched and heard me belittle myself. In turn, they started to follow my path. I would hear them say that they were not good enough or they were a mistake. I was shocked to think they thought of themselves that way. I would respond, “You are not a mistake, I love you!” I thought I was teaching them that they were better than that. But what I did not realize is that actions speak louder than words. I can say all day long you are not a mistake but if they see me and hear me belittle myself, why would they think any different? I am their mother; they are apart of me.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. And do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” In God, we find value and direction.

Hebrews 10:24-25 adds, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Once we give our life to the Lord, He often uses other believers to encourage, challenge, and walk with us.

Jason Gray’s song, “Who I am,” teaches us that we need to be reminded of who we are in Him. If we are to lean on our own understandings, we leave ourselves vulnerable to Satan. John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” We all need to be reminded of who we are in Him (the Lord).

When I lose my way,
And I forget my name
Remind me who I am
In the mirror all I see
Is who I don’t wanna be
Remind me who I am
In the loneliest places
When I can’t remember what grace is
Tell me, once again
Who I am to You, who I am to You
Tell me, lest I forget
Who I am to You, that I belong to You
To You
Who I am to You, who I am to You Tell me, lest I forget
Who I am to You, that I belong to You To You
When my heart is like a stone,
And I’m running far from home
Remind me who I am
When I can’t receive Your love
Afraid I’ll never be enough
Remind me who I am
If I’m Your beloved
Can You help me believe it
Tell me, once again
Who I am to you, who I am to You, whoa
Tell me, lest I forget
Who I am to you, that I belong to You
To You
I’m the one You love,
I’m the one You love

Not only do I need to be reminded of who I am in Him. I need to remind myself that I am so loved and valuable that He lives in me.
