Grow • Devotion #3: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

“If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” 1 Corinthians 12:26
Reading this verse makes me think about the time I broke my ankle. I decided it would be a great idea to jump off a stage at a youth event to pump up the kids. What I did not know is that right in my landing zone there was a pile of footballs. So here I am running and leaping off the stage as high as I could, coming down to land on the footballs. I instantly knew something was wrong with my ankle. I was taken to the hospital, and the rest is history. For the next eight weeks of my life, I could not put full pressure on my ankle, let alone walk normally. The same way Paul tells us, “If one member suffers, all suffer together…” Since my ankle was hurt, my whole body had to suffer from it. I could not do any physical activity. I sat on the couch, eating junk food, and watching way too much TV. All because of one broken bone in my body, now my whole body has to suffer.
Paul is talking about the church body in this context. Christ and His church form one body of believers. All Christians are a part of this body. Just like our physical bodies, every part of this body that Paul talks about, every member, has a specific function and duty. Each member of the body needs the other parts to function. Each member of the body needs to be close to each other and in communication with others. Jesus tells us we should be closely attached through love. Each member should also work well with the other parts of the body because each member is dependent on the other. The Body is made up of many people, and there are so many different skill sets in this body. I encourage you to figure out what the skill set that God gave you is and use it to strengthen the body.
